How 5G Technology Can Create Vibrant Cities

5G

The next generation of wireless network infrastructure will be built using small cell technology, employing 5G wireless technology, and creating Smart Cities, which can pivotally can transform local economies.

What’s a Smart City?

Smart cities are initiatives by communities to leverage wireless technology in ways that can make their community more time efficient for commuters, cost-effective for residents, and overall less intrusive to the environment. Cutting-edge platforms such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and wireless sensors are the driving force behind technology that can make cities smarter.

Many parts of the U.S. are utilizing electrical grids that were built as far back as the 1950’s, and their purpose was to manage activity powered by coal, petroleum and natural gas.

In order to widely adopt clean energy such as wind and solar, newly designed electrical grids with the capacity to manage and monitor weather driven energy, should start to replace outdated energy systems.

What’s a Smart Grid?

A smart grid is a system that acts in “smart” ways that people dispersed across far-flung distances would otherwise have to spend time doing. It also allows us to look at data about how a community uses electricity and see where energy is being unnecessarily lost, maximizing overall energy storage. The Smart Grid Consumer Collaborative estimated that for customers, smart grid adoption could lead to approximate savings of $40 to $100 per year in direct benefits and $50 per year in indirect benefits. By installing smart grid technology, medium-sized town Chattanooga, TN reduced outages by over 50% during a severe windstorm, saving $1.4 million during just one storm.

5G Can Unlock Potential

The full potential of Smart Cities will be unlocked by 5G networks and small cells, creating jobs. We’re working to make that happen. Read more research here.
