Americans need a national data privacy law that protects all Americans equally.
Data privacy issues have been in the news over the past few years, which has led to public concern over how data is treated, who has access to it, and how it is used. In fact, more than 84% of Americans are concerned about data privacy. Whether you use a wireless device for work, entertainment, or anything in between, the need for a national data privacy law affects you.
In the absence of a national privacy law, states across the country are determining their own data privacy laws, notes the R Street Institute. Unfortunately, the current state-level approach to data privacy legislation is inconsistent and is creating confusing systems for Americans and businesses to follow.
The Negative Effects of a Patchwork of State Privacy Laws
- Your data privacy rights can change the moment you cross state lines. Data knows no boundaries, yet your data may not be equally protected as you travel across the country. Five states have passed data privacy laws thus far, Connecticut, California, Colorado, Utah and Virginia, with more likely to follow this year.
- State data privacy laws are less transparent and personal rights are hard to understand. According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, current laws follow one of four legislative models. There is nothing to stop additional models from adoption, which makes tracking what is in one law versus what is in another nearly impossible.
- Costs may rise and innovation is threatened. Companies of all sizes are facing unprecedented uncertainty around compliance with conflicting laws, making the development of new products that leverage the 5G ecosystem challenging. Additionally, compliance can be costly, which could drive higher costs of goods for people like us.
To protect your data now, control what you can by following privacy tips on Android and Apple devices, such as removing Apps you don’t use, understanding your carrier’s privacy policy, and controlling your Wi-Fi connections.
But that doesn’t change the fact that Congress must pass a national, standardized framework for data privacy that protects the personal information of every American. Take a stand for a national privacy standard by demanding that your representatives take action.
